Medical Examinations (Non-NHS)
Certain services provided by the Doctors are not covered by the NHS and fees are payable for such items as:
- Large Good Vehicle (LGV) and Passenger Service Vehicle (PSV) licences
- Elderly driver licences
- Insurance
- Preemployment medicals
- Private certificates
- Holiday vaccinations
- Insurance claims
- Fitness for sports
Please ask the receptionist for such services. Charges are payable at the time of attendance, and the British Medical Association (BMA) recommended scale of fees is on display at the reception desk. For further information please see Why does my doctor charge fees?

Medical Certificates
Self-certificates are available from your employer for sickness of up to one week. Any certificate required from the Doctor for periods up to the first week can only be provided as a private certificate for which there is a charge.
Our Practice Nurse offers the following services:
Our Nurse Practitioner and Paramedic run a Minor Illness Clinic for minor problems, minor injuries and to triage more serious cases.
Specialist appointments for diabetes are also available.
If you are between the ages of 15 and 25 years you can have an NHS Chlamydia test. This is done on a urine sample. The results are confidential and can be sent to your mobile phone. Ask the doctors, advanced nurse practitioners or nurses for the test.

To reduce the risk of cervical cancer, smear tests should be performed every 3 years (unless otherwise indicated by the Doctors) between the ages of 25 to 65 years. You will be informed by computerized letter that your smear is due. Smears can be done at the surgery by the nurse and appointments can be made via reception.
Booking your Appointment with the Nurse
- NHS Travel Injections:
We provide NHS vaccinations required for travel. You can book an appointment after you have been consulted with a travel vaccination service and know which vaccinations you require.
Note: The Meadows Surgery does not have an obligation to provide travel vaccinations.
Prescriptions
If you require a prescription for vaccinations this will be ready to collect 2 working days following your appointment.
Holiday Health
It is always a wise precaution to pack some essential items in case of illness on holiday. Do choose medicines according to your needs and the country you are intending to visit. lf you take prescription medicines regularly remember to pack them too.
You may want to consider packing the following:
- Paracetamol Travel Sickness tablets Plasters and a small crepe bandage
- Rehydration solutions such as Dioralyte, Anti diarrhoeal, for example lmodium
- High factor sunscreen
- Anti-material tablets, Water purification tablets, Insect repellent
- Condoms or other contraceptives
- Sunhats for yourself and children

Travel Vaccination Charges
We offer most of the travel health service at no additional charge to the patient. However the NHS does not cover the cost of all the treatments you may need. Therefore, for some services you may need to pay.
Malaria Tablets are NOT provided on the NHS and sometimes can be bought over the counter or may require a private prescription. The nurse can advise regarding this, or you could discuss with your pharmacist. REMEMBER some tablets have to be started at least one week before you travel, and you need continue to take them when you return to the UK for the advised length of time.
